Try and say that ten times very quickly without twisting your tongue. No easy americanisms allowed: it's football, not soccer. Not easy, eh? Near impossible, you say? Well, that's exactly the reason why there has never been any mention of football on this website.

That, and the fact that the last time I watched a match was Italy v France, World Cup 1998, in Paris.

Italy is meeting Germany tonight (World Cup 2006 semifinal) and I have decided I will make an effort. I have just been reassured that players still wear shorts (mmh, footballers' chunky legs). Sadly, they are not allowed to take their top off during the World Cup. Or so I've just heard.

I got us a nice pizza for the occasion, as well as a bottle of Sicilian wine.

Oven on. Cork off. Twenty minutes to go.
