UK number plates also used to give away the region where the cars were registered, certainly in the 1970s, but only if you learnt the codes. I think it was the 2nd and 3rd letters of the initial three letters (when the format was ABC 123 D). My Mum used to know them all! When this was phased out, I don't remember anyone complaining. Perhaps people didn't notice?!
