plum

I finally found some time last night to catch up with the pile of weekend supplements by the side of my bed (I find it an insult to writers of any kind to just throw away unread papers without at least skimming through them rapidly) and blooming It-girl Victoria (commonly known as "Plum") Sykes was everywhere.

As a recent Sex and the City orphan, I approached with excited interest the articles tipping her debut novel Bergdorf Blondes to paint a portrait of a similar group of New York socialites. There so much publicity about its publication that the rights have already been bought for a movie, and Ms Plum has already got an advance for a sequel.

I had to wade through column after column of It-girliness, and the discovery of the existence of such a thing as a nose-hair wax, before deciding that I shall not look forward to this tome hitting the bookshops at the end of the month. Out of sheer curiosity, I might decide to look out for the paperback edition in the future. During a half-price book sale. In a charity shop.

If the incipit is anything to go by…

"Bergdorf Blondes are a thing, you know, a New York craze. Absolutely everyone wants to be one, but it's actually très difficult. You wouldn't believe the dedication it takes to be a gorgeous, flaxen-haired, dermatologically perfect New York girl with a life that's fabulous beyond belief."

…I'd rather go for a (much-needed) nose-hair wax.
