Patrick Cox's Wannabe shoesI am not averse to wearing some stranger's discarded clothes that I pick up from charity shops - there's nothing a good boiling in the washing machine will not get rid of.

I used to draw the line at stepping into other people's shoes, especially as it is rather difficult to find one's exact size - and style, whereas clothes can be altered or, ahem, grown into with a little effort and an adequate supply of Haagen-Dazs.

As I got poorer, my rules relaxed and I started buying used trainers when I found out most of them can go in the wash as well, much to my flatmate's cat excitement.

Yesterday afternoon I found the pair of Wannabes (cheaper line by Patrick Cox) I always wanted and never could afford. The person who donated them to the Notting Hill Housing Trust in Tooting made the charity six pounds and a skint fashion queen very happy.

The cat is already circling them.
