mash
A good way of defining whether a trend has burst into the mainstream is checking whether Madonna is endorsing it.
Take mashing for example (mixing two completely different tracks together). Once the prerogative of underground DJs on the verge of illegality, it reached the top ten with Richard X cleverly taking on Liberty X. MTV has recently taken it one step further by mixing videos (MTV Mash), and there are some fine examples on Soundhog.org. Of course, Madonna could only do it her own megalomaniac and greedy way, with a mix of two of her own songs (royalties? Ker-ching!) being used while she is a testimonial for Gap cord jeans (advertising contract? Ker-ching!!). Incidentally, one of the songs being mixed is her current single (album sales? Ker-ching!!!). Kudos. I can definitely see what Britney and Christina see in her.
