work

At the beginning of last week I had my 13-week re-evaluation interview at the job centre. I gave evidence of my job search, answered a few questions on how I go about it, then watched with horror this softly-spoken woman redo their agreement with me, remove the clause that enabled me to turn down jobs that paid less than 20k GBP per year before tax and tell me that she does not want to see me again in another thirteen weeks.

I walked home furious and depressed and panicking and thinking oh dear is this what I've got into, what with my qualifications and languages and skills and experience?

One loaf of bread (19p) a pack of Danish salami (72p) later (the binge of choice for people on the dole), I became so angry that I stopped doing almost everything that was not job search-related, sent out as many CVs as I could, went through a few interviews and eventually got myself one of them job things, starting in a week. It's not something I would have considered doing, and that's probably why I am so excited about it. I also love the idea that I found out about the job through people I would not have met had I not been blogging (a friend of David works there and told me about the vacancy).

Humble pie? Mmh, delicious! (rubs stomach)
