I am very fond of functional pieces of furniture and furnishings that serve more than one purpose: coffee tables that turn into dinner tables, footstools that contain precious storage place, armchairs that open up into beds for guests, bags that unfold into picnic blankets…

This is why my new bedroom curtain is ingeniously crafted so that it can quickly double up as a sleeping bag.

OK, it's a sleeping bag on a curtain rail. I was faced with an ultimatum by Dr B. ('I won't sleep at your place until you get curtains to block out the early morning light from your room'), so yesterday I went on a pilgrimage of my seven local charity shops, and the only thick material I could find that had no ugly floral print on it was a dark blue sleeping bag.

I washed it. I hung it. It works. It cost five pounds. I don't care.

One would have thought that it would also prevent me from waking up at dawn as I usually do. Nope. Up at five again.
