Stripping my life of useless waste of time - part two

[part one (quit smoking) still in progress]

I'm a freak. I like counting things, not unlike the geez. Some people go hunting, others do crosswords, I count and calculate things. It's my way of relaxing. Unsmoked cigarettes, money, calories, socks.

And internet connections.

Once I moved flats last September, I finally subscribed to a flat-rate dial-up internet connection with One.Tel for 12 pounds 99 a month. I had been spending loads before, and I was happy to be able to be connected 24 hours a day if I wanted to.

It sounded too good to be true, and I feared there was a catch, so I started writing down in a text file the connection and disconnection times. I also wanted to calculate how much I was saving compared to using the 0845 number I had before.

I kept track of the times diligently and meticulously (with only a handful of omissions), all day, every day - for the past six bloody months!

And do you think I ever sat down and tried to figure out how much I would have spent with the previous provider? No, neither did I. It's only been useful because it made me realize that after about a month my connections were cut after four hours exactly, and a while later every two hours (which is still the case).

I shall now breathe in, post this, disconnect and stop wasting time updating stupid files. There.

Does anyone know a good support group for compulsive overcalculators?

Hi there honey, Just to let you know that I am sad too and that you have been online for 54376+ minutes. Take care my *special* boy. Dr. B.

i.e. 906 hours or 37.7 whole days or 1 1/4 months. Or in the style of your quit meter "60+ jobs not applied for". ;-). x x x

Compulsive counter I may be, but calculating masochist alas not. Well, not unless I write all the figures straight into a spreadsheet and get that to do all the calculations for me. Which, OK, I confess, I often do.

I use spreadsheets for my accounts, expenses and bills, but for the daily internet connections list my old and slow computer forced me to use a text file, much faster to open. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Reminds me, I've never actually kept a list of how many lists I have…
