It is now exactly two weeks since I smoked my last cigarette, and I've decided to allow myself to post something about it.
It has not been easy, nor was it the most bitful task to go through, but it seems to be working so far. The strong feeling of pride balances out the panic of having to start doing everything without cigarettes. I'd like to thank the following for their role in helping me to stay smoke-free for 14 days:- Dr Bitful, for never failing to mention how great it is for him not to lick an ashtray anymore every time he kisses me - and for providing something else to suck on whenever the urge striked;
- G. the flatmate for going on holiday for three weeks, thus removing his tempting cigarettes from being around me all the time;
- the great chap who first thought of grinding and brewing coffee beans;
- Fitness First, for providing a means to burn the 300 extra daily calories that my slowed-down metabolism (because of kicking the filthy habit) cannot cope with any longer.
Without you I am nothing.

Well done! If you haven't already, can I recommend Allen Carr's book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking? It's absolutely superb.

And how timely on No Smoking Day too..! Seriously - well done, I know how hard it is. Be vigilant - it's not over yet.

I had read Carr's book a few years ago and it made perfect sense - I suppose I was not motivated enough to stop then. Without even thinking about it, I put into practice some of the advice from that book, such as smoking half a cigarette in the morning of the day you want to stop (so not to have too strong cravings from the night before); starting doing sports / relaxation a couple of months before planning to quit; picking a good, stress-free moment to stop; avoiding places and people who smoke, just for a short while. Having already stopped for over a year in the past, I know I'll always have to be vigilant: I will never be a non-smoker, I'll always have to consider myself an ex-smoker and I never will be able to smoke "just one", as I know that would lead me to take up smoking in just a few days.
