Thumbnail - an image of the warnings on packets of cigarettes

8 scary designs – collect them all! (click on thumbnail for full view)

I'd heard about this but I hadn't seen it yet, until today when I received a carton of cigarettes from G. who's just back from Christmas in Ireland. New EU regulation on health warnings on the front and back of cigarette packs. Bigger, bolder, scarier. Will it make me stop? Let's talk about it in the new year (it's high on my list of new year resolutions – it has been for the last 17 years unfortunately).

My dad used to say it was easy to give up smoking, he did it every night, it's just that he started again the next morning! :) One day however he did stop, from smoking 60 a day he got up one morning and decided that was it. Never had another one to this day. There-in lies the secret. He really wanted to stop. No amount of persuasion from others, be it government, friends or family will make you succeed. Apart from which, the governement really doesn't want you to stop, they like the tax you keep paying them.

Here in Canada, our warning labels have photos on them. Cancerous lungs, gums. Those are the worst. There are also photos of sad children and such that aren't as impactful. Some people here collect & trade them.
